Apato launches the automatic bit changer (ABC) for manual bit change on Pit Viper 270 and Pit Viper 290 series rigs.

The company stated that the ABC option is designed to replace rotating tricone bits faster than manual replacement and eliminate human interaction with the drill string, thereby operating the drilling fleet in a safer manner.

According to Abato, the drill bit can be replaced with the push of a button. This can be done from a remote control room or in a comfortable cab.

"The ABC option optimizes the productivity and efficiency of drilling operations and improves safety by eliminating exposure to live working environments," Epiroc added.

The ABC turntable can store three rotating tri-cone drill bits of different sizes and cutting structures, a total of four on-board drill bits, with flexibility and versatility in the drilling site. The unique bit adaptor allows the system to safely replace worn bits with new new bits without contacting live work.

Epiroc said that compared to manual processes, ABC was able to complete a little change in a shorter period of time, thereby reducing downtime. Improved machine utilization and profitability by eliminating the time saved by manually replacing drill bits.

"The automatic bit changer is the next step in the advancement of autonomous drilling," said Tim Ledbetter, vice president of automation research and development. "Continuously evaluating how to move the industry forward is the key to this innovation. We will eliminate fieldwork for our customers through safer and more efficient technology, machines and operations."

Epiroc claims that using the ABC option to customize a Pit Viper 270 or Pit Viper 290 rig can bring many benefits to the operator. It reduces the possibility of human error, weight-lifting-related injuries, wasted manual adjustment time, and accidents.

The elimination of these live working tasks is critical in the mining industry, and there are a variety of options for eliminating live operations that can be used in a range of Aptor equipment.

Epiroc said that at the end of the field test, ABC will be available for new rigs and rig modifications already on site.
