NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Training camp is giving two-time All-Pro Kevin Byard a sense of normalcy as the Tennessee Titans safety works through the grief over his mother's unexpected death earlier this summer.

“At times, I feel like I’m still in shock a little bit, it hasn’t set all the way in,” Byard said of losing his mother, Artina Stanley, in June.

Alexander Rossi snapped a 49-race losing streak that dated all the way back to the 2019 IndyCar season by winning at one of his favorite tracks. Rossi won Saturday on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where his 2016 victory in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 jumpstarted his American motorsports career. Rossi’s last victory was at Road America in the 10th race of the 2019 season. Christian Lundgaard finished second to give Rahal Letterman Lanigan its first podium of the season. Will Power finished third for Team Penske and the Chevrolet driver cycled back to the top of the IndyCar standings for the third time this season.

Daniil Kvyat's anguishing absence from racing will finally end Sunday at Indianapolis. The promising Russian with the Formula One résumé qualified 36th for the NASCAR Cup Series road course race, his first start since late 2020. The 28-year-old posted three podium finishes in seven years on the international circuit. He spent last season as an F1 backup driver and was supposed to drive this year in FIA's world endurance series. But his team withdrew after the governing body imposed sanctions and restrictions on Russians after the country's invasion of Ukraine. Now he'll become the first Russian to start a Cup race.

New Zealand skipper Peter Burling won one fleet race and finished second in the other two to take the lead in the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix Plymouth.  It was the best day yet in Burling’s two seasons in tech tycoon Larry Ellison’s global league, which is contested in foiling 50-foot catamarans. He scored 28 points to take a six-point lead over trans-Tasman rival Tom Slingsby of two-time defending SailGP champion Team Australia, and Quentin Delapierre of France.  The Kiwis are in strong position to make it to Sunday’s three-boat podium race, which will follow the final two fleet races.

The retirement of franchise sacks leader Ryan Kerrigan closes an era for Washington football. Kerrigan was the last of the star players when the team was known as the Redskins before the name was dropped in the summer of 2020 in favor of the temporary Washington Football Team. Kerrigan was honored Saturday during the first week of the first camp as the Commanders. But much has changed in three years with only 11 players in training camp remaining from the days of the old name. That is a product of coach Ron Rivera’s roster overhaul since taking over.

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND (AP) - Results from Scotch football:

Novak Djokovic is holding out hope that he’ll be able to compete at the U.S. Open despite not being vaccinated against the coronavirus. The 21-time Grand Slam champion says on his social media accounts that he’s been training as if he’ll play at Flushing Meadows when the last major of the year begins Aug. 29. He wrote: “I am preparing as if I will be allowed to compete, while I await to hear if there is any room for me to travel to US. Fingers crossed!” The United States does not allow unvaccinated noncitizens to enter the country. That is why the Serb needed to sit out big events in Indian Wells, California, and Miami this season.

Sean Crocker’s chip-in eagle on the par-5 18th gave him a two-stroke lead headed into the final round at the Hero Open. The American is bidding for his first European tour title and finished at 3-under 69 to keep Jens Dantorp of Sweden two shots behind after three rounds at Fairmont St. Andrews. Crocker started the day with a one-shot lead and moved to 18 under for the tournament. He's going for a wire-to-wire win. Dantorp is alone in second after a bogey-free 69. Adrian Otaegui (64) and David Law (65) are both three shots off the lead.

Having fans at training camp is not an annoyance to Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel. It’s part of his story. He was one of those fans once. It worked out rather well for him, a tale that involves how a lost hat almost three decades ago led to him coaching in front of Dolphins fans at the training camp for the first time on Saturday. An act of kindness at Denver Broncos camp when McDaniel was a kid started his life in football.

Third-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut has cruised past wild card Filip Misolic 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the Generali Open to claim his 11th ATP title. Bautista Agut has lifted his second trophy this year after Doha. It is also his second title on clay after Stuttgart in 2014. The Spaniard was dominant. He broke Misolic twice in each set. Misolic had to complete his semifinal against Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann on Saturday that was suspended a day earlier due to rain. Misolic prevailed in the third-set tiebreaker to advance to the final in his first ATP tournament.

Borussia Dortmund says striker Sébastien Haller needs chemotherapy treatment because his testicular tumor was found to be malignant. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl says “Sébastien will now receive the best possible treatment. The chances of recovery are very good.” The club says Haller will miss “several months” and that it will not be releasing any further medical information on his condition. The 28-year-old Haller joined Dortmund from Ajax for 31 million euros ($31.5 million) on July 6 but had to leave a preseason training camp 12 days later for treatment and an operation after the tumor was found.

Kyle Busch is getting antsy about not having a contract next season. NASCAR's only active driver with multiple Cup championships has been unable to extend his deal with Joe Gibbs Racing because the team is still seeking a sponsor for Busch. But he said Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway that he's willing to take a pay cut and drive for less than his market value, as well as make other concessions, in his bid to secure a job for 2023. It's late enough in the process that Busch is talking to teams other than Gibbs.

Formula One drivers tackled a difficult rain-drenched third practice ahead of qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix later. Runaway championship leader Max Verstappen and Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez only came out late into the hour-long session. Aston Martin driver Sebastian Vettel went backward into the crash barriers with about 10 minutes to go and a red flag came out. Rain began thundering down around midday and the Hungaroring track was drenched by the 1 p.m. start. The Ferraris were the first out and Charles Leclerc slid when missing a chicane. Williams driver Nicolas Latifi surprised everyone by posting the fastest time on his final lap.

Barcelona has auctioned off a digital art piece depicting an iconic goal by Johan Cruyff for $693,000 as it seeks new revenues to battle its way out of massive debt. Barcelona says that the auction run by Sotheby’s in New York for the club’s first NFT, or non-fungible token, closed at $550,000. The auctioneer’s fees increased the final sale price to $693,000. The art piece depicts Cruyff’s memorable goal from 1973 when the Netherlands great soared through the air with his leg outstretched to score. Cruyff appears to be dipped in gold in the NFT. Barcelona is struggling to pay down 1 billion euros of debt.

Formula One and its drivers have launched a campaign to stamp out abusive behavior from fans at races and online. Abusive behavior from spectators overshadowed the Austrian Grand Prix two weeks ago and fans used social media to make F1 aware of rampant harassment, sexism, racism, and homophobia. The campaign launched with a short video clip featuring F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and all 20 drivers each speaking in a collective message. Verstappen says “we are united and ask you to join us in driving this out" while seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton adds “we cannot let those who think they can abuse others get away with it.”

An Everton fan who has been helping Ukrainian refugees was brought on to take a penalty during the Premier League team’s preseason match against Dynamo Kyiv. Paul Stratton is a 44-year-old Liverpool municipal worker who has traveled to Poland to deliver supplies to refugees fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Stratton, in full Toffees uniform, came on as a substitute toward the end of Everton and Dynamo’s “match for peace” at Goodison Park on Friday night. Everton manager Frank Lampard gave him instructions on the touchline before Stratton tucked away his penalty. The goal didn’t count and the game finished 3-0. The match was broadcast live nationally in Ukraine.

LOS ANGELES — If you haven't heard of Brandon Nakashima, you will soon.

PITTSBURGH — The worst news for the Steelers this week came out of Seattle, not Saint Vincent, believe it or not.

MINNEAPOLIS — There was no skepticism from here over the Vikings' hire of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah to run the football operation, not until he said that his goal was to lead the team in a "joyful pursuit of excellence.''

CHICAGO — For many, fandom goes beyond a team or city. It’s an opportunity to build a community and find their people, often spilling into real life. And WNBA fans might be organizing exactly what the league needs to grow its audience.
