Halliburton introduces depth-of-cut rolling elements for PDC drill bits

Houston-Halliburton announced the launch of Cruzer depth-of-cut rolling elements, an innovative drill technology designed to increase tool face control without reducing drilling efficiency. This allows operators to increase their penetration rate (ROP) at a lower cost per foot, thereby improving economy.

Halliburton's polycrystalline diamond composite (PDC) drill bit has this function, which is designed to provide high wear resistance and impact resistance in the most challenging formations. When using Cruzer technology, the depth of cut can be maintained during the entire drill bit operation. Rolling elements are particularly effective in applications that require more stable control of the directional drilling process.

In addition, the small size of the rolling elements allows this function to be incorporated into new or existing designs, so that the drill can be easily repaired using Cruzer technology. Operators will achieve lower friction levels and lower heat generation, thereby increasing efficiency and reliability.

Halliburton drills are developed through a proprietary process called Customer Interface Design (DATCI), which customizes each drill to the operator's specific application. DATCI has a global network of design experts who are familiar with regional characteristics and cooperate with customers to optimize solutions.

At the site, a major operator in the Williston Basin recently deployed Cruzer technology to drill a well curve in 14 hours. Due to the reduced wear of the depth-of-cut element, this operation is the fastest of any deviation in this area. This allows the operator to take advantage of aggressive cutting structures with improved control and steering capabilities.
